Too Cool for School?No Way!
Punya Mishra and Matthew Koehler
Technology has an important role to play in each and every classroom. Punya Mishra and Matthew Koehler's article Too Cool for School? No Way! examines the inclusion of technology in schools. There is an abundance of technology in our society which is dynamic and forever changing. Technology is much more than computers, phones and cars; technology sustains our complex society. Technology also helps us to travel, locate information, earn money and much more. For that reason, it is necessary that it should be entirely integrated into the teaching profession.
I believe technology has become a fundamental part of who we all are as humans. In so, I strongly agree with the article and believe that every child should not experience a classroom that is isolated from technology and in turn their community. Including technology in the classroom will positively affect students as I believe technology can be more than simply a toy and can hold a high educational value. The students born into society today are considered digital natives therefore; using technology in the classroom will allow their strengths to shine. Many teachers may perceive the inclusion of technology as a disaster however, due to the generational differences students are now fluent in the use and operation of various technologies. Technology can also be and should be used within all of the curriculum content areas; it does not need to be a separate entity. Consequently, this article made it possible for me to accept and encourage the inclusion of technology in my future classroom.
Teachers may have a variety of views in relation to technology, however teaching is all about providing students with a sound education and enhancing their needs, not our own. The article refers to the TPACK model as an effective way to integrate technology into the classroom. I believe for those teachers who are less confident or those who rely on the traditional teaching methods, this model can be an extremely useful tool. The TPACK model involves the intersection and interplay between technology, pedagogy, content and knowledge. Repurposing technology is also an important element the article highlights. Initially a form of technology is created for entertainment purposes and generally not suitable for educational use. In so, teachers need to be able to alter the technology accordingly. For Instance, the use and purpose of technology will be different for each classroom of students and their surrounding environment. Thus, through the use of the TPACK model I believe I could effectively integrate technology into my own classroom.
